Air Conditioning Basics

The four main components to your air conditioner are:

Condenser: The condenser is the outside metal unit and where the gas from the compressor is condensed into a liquid. The gas entering the condenser is very hot. The temperature is then lowered, so the gas can convert back to a liquid.

Compressor: The compressor is inside the condenser. It circulates the pressurized refrigerant, to concentrate the heat, and changes the low pressure gas to high pressure.

Evaporator: The evaporator is the part of the system inside the home. In simple language, it absorbs the heat from your home.

Expansion Valve: The expansion valve controls the amount of refrigerant in your system.

All of these pieces are connected by a copper tube that handles refrigerant, creating a closed loop. Heat is collected in the evaporator, sent outside to the condenser. The heat is removed, and the cool air is recirculated back into your home.

AC Facts

An Air Conditioner Doesn’t Create Cool Air.
What happens in the AC process is actually the removal of heat from the air. Your AC uses a chemical called refrigerant to remove heat and transfer it outside. The warm air runs through the lines and coils in your unit and goes from liquid to gas and back again. During this process, the refrigerant removes the heat and transfers it elsewhere so that when the air comes out the other side, it is cool.

Your AC Will Remove Humidity.
Lower humidity helps the overall comfort level in your home by making you feel cooler, even if the temperature is the same.

Your Air Filter Needs To Be Checked And Replaced Every Three To Six Months.
(depending on the manufacturer’s recommendations)
A dirty air filter restricts your air flow, which reduces efficiency, costing you money, and over time can put stress on your unit and could cause a costly repair.

Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance.
Your air conditioner needs regular checkups to keep it running in tip-top shape. Having regular annual preventative maintenance will bring your system longer life and fewer breakdowns over all.

SEER
The Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) measures air conditioning and heat pump cooling efficiency, which is calculated by the cooling output for a typical cooling season divided by the total electric energy input during the same time frame. A higher SEER rating means greater energy efficiency.

Air Conditioner Maintenance in Austin, TX 78701

“I remember one extremely hot summer day several years ago, watching with amusement as a couple of boys in the neighborhood were trying to fry an egg on the hood of an old car. But a few hours later, the scorching temperatures did not seem nearly as funny whenever I noticed the temperature on my thermostat steadily rising. The fan on the airconditioning unit was still turning, but unfortunately it was blowing nothing but hot air. Things got steamy very quickly. After calling several AC companies and being told that they might be able to get to my problem "next week," I was desparate and decided to try a company outside the Austin city limits. This is how I stumbled on Wilson's Heating and Air Conditioning. This proved to be the best piece of luck with air coditioning issues that I ever had. Not only did Stephen Wilson, the company's owner, show up to address my problem personally, but within a couple of hours, he patched my badly degraded unit and kept it going until it had zero life. His company was a logical choice for us whenever we had to replace the unit. Since that hot summer day, Stephen has done a lot of work for my family and we have always found him to be honest, reliable, fast, and very knowledgeable about the products that he uses. We would never consider letting anyone else work on our heating and air units. If Stephen tells you something, you can "take it to the bank." He and his office manger, Nicole, operate Wilson's Heating and Air Conditioning the way EVERY business should be run. Their motto is the needs of the customer are always FIRST.”

Air Conditioner Replacement in Pflugerville, TX 78664

“Have had Wilson's a/c taking care of our old home for past 2 years and when I moved to our new home, used other vendors that were closer. None of them were as honest as the Wilson group about what I needed and therefore, fought a/c problems for 1st year in my new home. Wilson's came out, told be what I needed. They were able to get my new system in and fixed the other units to work more efficiently. I now have a comfortable home. I recommend this company to everyone that mentions they have a/c or heating problems. Stephen explains how to make the a/c work more efficient, how the machines are suppose to operate for maximum performance.”

Air Conditioner Repair in Round Rock, TX 78664

“My Heat/Air system recently ceased working after a storm. I called and ask Stephen Wilson, who had installed the system two summers ago to come and diagnose the problem. Stephen worked my need in between other appointments on the same morning I called. Apparently, the breaker had been tripped during the recent storm. He pointed out where the breaker was and said there was no charge for this call. Since he was there, I asked him to look at a new thermostat I had purchase to see if it met my needs. After the discussion, I decided to return the very expensive one and purchased a more economical (MUCH simpler) one from Stephen. I also had been waiting for his new Maintenance Service, which he told me about on a service call last summer. With the discount and the Maintenance plan, I got a great deal! I highly recommend Wilson’s Heating and Air!”
